His Esquire culinary sidekick drove from coast-to-coast in the midst of the quarantine, while Gordinier did a fair amount of driving himself they refused to fly. Jeff Gordinier at Esquire managed to create an impressive list of 23 restaurants that he and his staff ate at from coast to coast between November 2019 and early March 2020 - which speaks very well of both his prodigious appetite…and his even more prodigious expense account. The year was so filled with culinary pain that both Michelin and Zagat decided not to do “best of” ratings for the year. (And who would have believed, just a year ago, that the code “N95” would sound like anything other than an area in the Nevada desert where aliens landed?) As for me, I like those disposable blue hospital masks because, among other virtues, they don’t fog up my glasses like cloth masks, or heavier N95s. It was a year when we argued over which masks worked best. It’s been a year when GrubHub, DoorDash, Postmates, Uber Eats and other home delivery services did very well indeed with takeout chow.Īnd when we discovered, for a while at least, that eating on the sidewalk wasn’t just something you did in Paris, it was a great pleasure for all of us - with outdoor restaurant streets opening all over town. Except…well, you know…this has been a year when more restaurants have closed than opened.
